Stylistic Errors, continued

3. Confusing Word Order

Sometimes the sentence can be improved stylistically by a simple rearrangement of the words. Look at the following sentence:

The sofa was purchased by Eileen last month for the purpose of decorating her living room.

There's a particular reason why the word order in this sentence is less than straightforward: the sentence is written in the passive voice. Rewriting the sentence in the active voice will make the sentence more concise:

Last month Eileen purchased a sofa to decorate her living room.

In general, clear, direct sentences are stylistically effective. Stay focused on clarity and precision.
