We saw in an earlier example that an answer choice can be
wrong if it changes the meaning of the original sentence. Sometimes the
meaning of the original sentence will need to change in order to fix an
error. However, this is not often the case; unless the change is absolutely
necessary, the correct answer choice will not distort the meaning of the
original sentence.
That means that you should make an effort to look beyond
the grammar of the sentence when you're reading it and think
about what it means. Any answer choice that makes unnecessary alterations
to that meaning is wrong. In this sense, these questions also test your
reading comprehension skills, not just your knowledge of grammar.
