Lesson: Sentence Correction Basic - 04

The CAT Method

The least effective way that you can approach a sentence correction question is to read the sentence and then read every alternative into the sentence. This is too time-consuming! The CAT Method provides you with a more structured approach that focuses on error-identification. It is:

Identify the primary difference among the remaining answer choices and eliminate choices with the wrong construction. If you still have more than one choice left, look for a secondary difference and eliminate choices based on that.
Select the remaining choice or, if more than one choice remains, choose whichever sounds best.

Sometimes the grammar of the answer choice is correct, but the choice doesn't make sense with the rest of the sentence. You'll only discover this problem if you take the time to read your choice back into the sentence.
