The One Sentence Test

One way to help identify the conclusion is to ask yourself the following question: If the author had only one sentence in which to convey her meaning, which would she choose? This is called the One Sentence Test, and will help you to identify the author's main point.

For the following argument, click on the sentence that you think is the conclusion. Remember to use the One Sentence Test and any Keywords to help you identify the author's conclusion.

• Since Arlene Hodges was installed as president of the Caralis Corporation, profits have increased by an average of 11 percent per year.
• During the tenure of her predecessor, the corporation's profits averaged a yearly increase of only 7 percent.
• So, Ms. Hodges' aggressive marketing efforts are responsible for the increased growth in Caralis' profits.
