Isolating Variables

The textbook method to solving these equations is to isolate the variable on one side of the equation by doing the same thing to both sides.
To isolate x in the following equation, we start by multiplying both sides by 3:

Then we add 6 to both sides:
Finally, we divide by two, and x is all alone on one side of the equation, which is exactly what we want:
