ISSB Story 7

The responses given in the form of stories provide to the psychologist, valuable clues and indications about the candidate’s mental make-up and personality traits including leadership qualities and social adaptability. The stories throw-up to the surfacc the hidden motives, hopes, fears, prejudices, likes; dislikes, emotional stability, interests, and natural tendencies of the individual. It would thus be possible for the examiner to determine whether the candidate has a positive attitude and constructive orientation. One can also see the fear, guilt, frustration, under confidence, noncooperation and such similar negative or anti-social attributes readily reflected in the stories.

A positive person on the other hand will speak about courage, confidence, co-operation, friendliness, warmth, help, sympathy and such favourable traits in his narratives. One can readily experiment this technique in a practical manner. Here a picture has been presented, with four related stories written by different candidates. The examiner’s comments appear at the end of each story. To make a self assessment of yourself, please observe the picture for one minute. As soon as you have finished observing the picture, you write your story about what you saw. Thereafter read the stories written by the other candidates and the examiner’s comments. You can then evaluate your own personality rating. You will also understand why you must think positively to attain success.

Abid was a smart, active and cheerful student of M.A. Senior Class. Though he was quite poor, he was able to pursue his studies because of his determination, hard work and keenness. Being very intelligent and attentive he had no difficulty in securing the first position and a first division in his final examinations. This earned him a scholarship to proceed with his studies without tuition fees. To meet his other expenses undertook to give tuitions to some children during the morning and evening hours. Qamar is a four ear old daughter of a rich industrialist and Abid was he tuition in aster. Although keen to take tuition from Abid . Qarnar refused to go to school. In The picture we see Ahid per sanding Qarnar to go to school. He motivated the child by promising to tell her interesting stories. He also told the child that she could play and hear many stories at the school. The after Qarnar went to school with enthusiasm. Qamar’s father watched Abid ability to influence others successfully. He so appreciated his intelligence, industry, self-confidence and sustained efforts of the young man to better his lot. When Abid completed his MA. with distinction he was absorbed by Qamar’s father in his big firm as a junior executive, Displaying remarkable leadership qualities, Abid rose to a very high position in a short period and made valuable contribution towards the industrialization of his motherland.

A very well written and purposeful story which force brings out the author imaginative and expressive faculties. The hero is presented as a well motivated individual will? a clear objective. He works towards his chosen goal in a planned. organized and methodical manner. The great asset of the author is his remarkable ability to influence and motivate others md this is rejlect2d h y the actions and attitudes of the hero in the story. 7he narrative is written in a positive view and the author appears to be quite confident and optimistic of his success. Specially recommended and selected.

Karamat’s father, who was a truck driver died in an accident when Kararnat was young. He was not only a rash driver but also addicted to drinking and he dashed his truck against a tree. Karamat grew up as an obstinate child. He did not attend the school and spent his time roaming about the streets in bad company. He took to pick pocketing and stealing. In the picture we see Karamat trying to rob the jewels which a child is wearing. While snatching the earring of the child, Karamat hurt the child badly and the child began to cry. Karamat got angry and beat the child and it cried still louder. It attracted the passers by when Karamat attempted to run away, it was too late. He was caught red handed and handed over to the police.. Finally he had to spend a number of years in jail.

This spotlights the negative thinking and approach of the author. The hero has been projected as an irresponsible, antisocial individual.. He shuns hard work and goes after dubious short-cuts to earn his livelihood. The hero also does not display any inclination or keenness to reform or improve. The author thus appears to have no urge or worthy goal. He accepts failures (is U routine and gives in readily. The candidate will not be able to make positive and constructive contribution to the organization. Rejected

Altaf was working as a domestic servant in the house of a leading and rich business man. Unfortunately lie was lazy by nature and hated work. He never performed properly the jobs assigned to him and he always gave excuses. The master finally lost patience and sacked him from his job. Altaf got angry and vowed to take vengeance on the master. In the picture we see Altaf trying to kidnap the young daughter of his former master. However, Altaf was terribly frightened and clumsy in his attempt at kidnapping. The child began to cry and the mother of the child raised a alarm. The master unleashed the two big dogs. Terribly afraid of the dogs, Altaf began to run madly and widely. In his blind dash, he hit against an on coming bus and died on the spot.

Comments

In this story we can find positive proof for the negative, antisocial and defeatist attitude and thinking of the author. The hero is lazy and averse to cxcii himself physically. He blames others for his failures. We find the hero lacking in courage and confidence. When faced with a crisis or difficult problem, the author will not be able to rise up to the occasion. He is likely to develop cold feet and give up without a fight. Rejected.

Ibrar was on his way to the CSS interview. He was an intelligent and smart youngrnan who had done quite well in his written papers. He was very confident of doing well in the interview and getting selected for the CSS. On his way to the bus stop he came across a young child who was crying and walking aimlessly. It appeared as though the child had lost its way. It was also attempting to cross the road and Ibrar felt that it ran the serious risk of being run over b’ the speeding vehicles. Ibrar knew that if he attended to the child he would be late or even miss his CSS. interview. Nevertheless, being a responsible and selfless young man he decided to do his duty. He took the child to the nearest police station and explained ho he found the child. The police officer at Ibrar request telephoned PCS and informed them how Ibrar had been held up. Re was allowed to come late and at the interview. His selfless and timely work was appreciated. He was also successful at the interview. In addition, he also received a reward from the parents of the child.

Comments

In this story the author projects positive thoughts and noble ideals. The hero has hopes and is oriented towards success. He has done well in the written test and looks forward to succeed in the interview. When faced with c problem and forced to choose, he decides without hesitation. He places duly above his self-interest. Again we find him exercising his initiative and imagination to make the best use of situation. At his instance the police officer telephones. And the incident is turned into as asset because of his resourcefulness. The author is intelligent. imaginative and practical. Selected.
