Pakistani society has been desperately caught up in
a state of turbulence. During the course of a year, on an average, 6000
individuals commit suicide, 5500 are murdered, 2500 women are raped, 3500
children are subjected to sexual assault, 500 vehicles are lifted, 5000 mobile
phones are snatched at gun point. A number of houses are burgled. Dacoits hit
the highways and this trend is gaining strength day by day. Some of the causes
that account for making the life of an average Pakistani miserable are:
The foremost cause is the wide range of inequality
in distribution of wealth. A marginal percentage of our population called the
elite of the society has full command over much of the income, moveable and
immoveable wealth, property and means of production and distribution. What we
witness happening in our society is a saga of clash between the haves and
have-nots. Every increment of wealth that is produced finds its way into the
treasure chests of the high and the mighty. The consequent sense of deprivation
taking over the masses either bids them to commit suicide or forcibly snatch
whatever they can from the rich. This is a very dangerous trend and the student
of world history looks at it as an early warning of a coming revolution.
Other causes have no independent existence. They
are offshoots of the above mentioned main cause i.e. the absolute political
empowerment of the feudal. The feudalistic system is the anti-thesis of
democratic order. Military is undemocratic by nature. It cannot be expected to
overthrow feudalism unless the-leader of revolution is a person of vision and
devotee of common mans rule like General Parke of Korea. who abolished
feudalism in 1949 with one stroke of the pen and put his underdeveloped country
on the road to progress. Those who dared to indulge in corruption after the
Revolution were given exemplary punishments. In our set up dispensation of
justice and award of punishment is rare. Why, for instance, hundred thousand
cases are lying pending with the courts, Justice delayed is justice denied also
accompanies the scourge of corruption. Why crime rate is climbing fast when
Police, the agent of maintenance of law and order, has been placed in vigilant
position. Reason is innocents are stuffed into jails while the crooks are let
loose to commit street crime at will. If every department faithfully performs
its assigned duty, peace and harmony reigns supreme. But the system in vogue
does not let any department function to justify its existence.
