Pillars of good governance
Following are some of the important pillars of good governance(a) A government set-up is composed of various departments like judiciary, the legislative, executive and administrative branches. The aim of good governance is served if each component part of the government functions in accordance with its assigned mandate and to its full capacity with efficiency avoiding red tape, corruption and mismanagement. It tends to meets all targets assigned to it in time.(b) A sound system of good governance is one that promotes public peace, guarantees human rights, ensures sustainable economic development and is purely democratic in letter and spirit.(c) It strengthens the role of civil society to bolster conflict resolution, national reconciliation, and a broad based consensus on social issues, empowerment of women, the rule of law, constitutional guarantees, and develops free and responsible media.(d) Good governance practices promote the pace of economic development on the principles of equitable distribution of wealth. Concentration of wealth in fewer hands is avoided as an anti-poverty measure and social justice.(e) Political, social and economic priorities are based on broad societal consensus so that the poorest and the most vulnerable have a voice in decision-making over the allocation of development resources in particular. Narrow political considerations are not permitted to take precedence over the public good.(f) It caters for a professional civil service and an appropriate legal frame-work which provides a predictable and stable environment ensuring financial accountability and transparency(g) Good governance creates environment for leadership building through educational and a variety of professional training institutions and NGOs working for peoples’ benefit.
