These salt mines are located in the trans- Indus
extension of the Salt Range. Among these mines Bhadurkhel (district Kohat) salt
deposits are very: large, with thickness of 100 meters, and production from
these mines is more than 50 thousand tonnes annually. The thickness of Jatta
and Karak mines is 30 meters, while reserves of these mines, however, are
thought to be very large. Annual production of rock salt of Pakistan in 1990-91
was 736 thousand tonnes, which reaches 1,394 thousatid tonnes during 2000-01.
During 2007-08, production of rock salt was 1,849 thousand tonnes.
Besides, salt is also obtained from brine and salt
lakes, but the amount obtained from these sources is relatively small. Salt is
also harvested in the Tharparkar area of Sindh where a’l-metre layer of salt
covers an extensive area and it is also obtained by evaporating sea water along
the Makran and Lasbela coasts.
Large deposits of concentrated brine have been
discovered at. Haryana near Khewra.
