Chiniot Deposits

Recently large deposits of good quality iron ore reserves have been discovered near Chiniot in Kirana hills in Chiniot district (Punjab).

Besides, some iron ore deposits have been reported at Mazari Tang, Marai Bela and Samana Range in Kohat area. These deposits are of hematite quality with 40- 45% iron content, but their total quality has not been estimated.

Although, Pakistan has established a Steel Mill at Karachi and many other small steel mills at various places, but their needs are met by imported iron ore and scarp iron. Local iron ore reserves commercial exploitation has not started due to low grade ore, small quantity, and their location in inaccessible areas, and they are not suitable for a big or medium size steel mill.
