Algebra In Data Sufficiency: Quadratics

The Exam often tests your understanding of quadratics by including them in Data Sufficiency questions.

The key to solving many Data Sufficiency quadratics is to remember that a quadratic equation, ax 2 + bx + c = 0 , is the product of two binomials set equal to zero.

For example:

x 2 - 5x + 6 = 0 is the product of (x - 2 ) ( x - 3 ) = 0

x 2 - 6x + 9 = 0 is the product of (x - 3 ) ( x - 3 ) = 0

Solving for x in the second quadratic, note that the two answers give you a single value, 3.
