The failure of state of Pakistan to effectively
deal with the menace of extremism and militancy whether ethnic, sectarian or
religious not only caused the deepening of societal polarization but also
augmented its economic predicament.
Therefore, the threat of extremism in Pakistan is
as old as the history of that country. Since the creation of Pakistan on August
14, 1947 till today, the country is exposed to political, religious, sectarian,
class and gender extremism. However, in the last six decades of Pakistan’s
history, the transformation of extremism, intolerance, militancy, and radicalization
took place. Pakistan, where the threat and challenge of extremism were not so
serious as it is today, however, experienced worst form of political violence
arid acts of terrorism in the last three decades.
