People have all sorts of different definitions to sum up the concept of critical reading. Our definition is designed to bring you success with the questions that will determine your exam score:

Critical reading = PERSPECTIVE.

At CAT, we use the word "perspective" to sum up the idea of reading critically. Gaining perspective means stepping back from the passage. It means carefully evaluating WHY the author wrote the piece and HOW he put it together, instead of concentrating on the content.

"Perspective" is a great word because it conjures up a whole lot of test-related tasks:
