Ratios

We use ratios to make comparisons between two things. When we express ratios in words, we use the word "to" -- we say "the ratio of something to something else". Ratios can be written in several different ways.

Ratios, like fractions, are another way of expressing Part/Whole relationships, although ratios often refer to Part/Part relationships as well. In either case, the setup remains the same:

A class has 12 male students and 21 female students.
The ratio of male students to female students =
The ratio of male students to all the students in the class
