0, 1 and –1 are the freaks of the number line when it comes to exponents. Why? Because 0 and 1 are the only numbers that equal themselves when raised to any power. –1 is unique in that it equals itself when raised to any odd power.

Whenever you get an exponents question involving variables in Data Sufficiency, you need to consider whether these three numbers might be exceptions to the general situation of the question.

For this statement, we know x can’t be 0 or 1 because x has to be odd and negative. But x could certainly be –1. Would that make a difference?
