The silk industry requires two types of raw material;

Natural Silk

It is prepared by silkworm, its production is very small and its limited demand due to heavy cost, its demand is met by imported silk form China and Central Asian countries. Manufacturing of natural silk cloth in Pakistan is limited an due to its heavy cost blended silk is produced.

Art Silk

Artificial silk, at the beginning was imported, but now there are 25 units engaged in manufacturing of three kinds of filament yarn, namely Acetate Rayon Yarn (one unit with capacity to manufacture three thousand tonnes) nylon filament yarn (3 units with installed capacity of 2 thousand tonnes) and polyester filament yarn (21 units with capacity of 95 thousand tonnes). The total installed capacity of all these units is 100 thousand tonnes.
