Triangles: Area

To find the area of a triangle, multiply the base by the height, and then divide by 2. The division by 2 comes from the fact that a parallelogram can be divided into 2 triangles. The base and height of a triangle must be perpendicular to each other.

The area of a triangle can always be found by using the formula

Choose one side to be the bottom of the triangle: this is the base. The height is the perpendicular distance from the uppermost angle to the base line, where the base line is the line of the base extended infinitely in both directions.
