Woolen Textile Industry

Sheep rearing and manufacturing of woollen cloth, blankets and other products like shawls and carpets etc., is one of the oldest occupation in the sub-continent, specially in mountainous areas of Pakistan. This was because raw material was easily available and due to’ cold mountain climate woollen cloth and products was their domestic need. Therefore hand looms woven woollen cloth is being manufactured for thousands years back, and is still in practice in northern hilly areas of Pakistan.

Like all other industrial establishments, woollen textile mills were also established in big industrial cities. So, at the time of partition (1947) Pakistan’s share was only a small woollen mill and a number of cottage industries and it produced a small quantity of blankets, carpets, shawls and tweeds.

At the early years of Pakistan’s independence, Pakistan had to import worsted and woollen goods from foreign countries. A woollen mill named “Valika woollen Mill” was first established at Karachi in 1949. Today with more than 70 large, medium and small units, Pakistan has become self-sufficient in woollen hosiery, shawls, blankets, cloth and carpets. The import of worsted and woollen goods has largely been reduced and carpets and worsted yarn are exported.

Raw Material

Pakistan produces rough and course quality of wool, so due to low quality and short staple wool the woollen textile industry, continues to be relatively small as compared to the cotton textile industry.

Due to unorganized sheep rearing, along with low quality, Pakistan is not able to fulfill its domestic needs, especially fine long staple wool requirements.

Pakistani wool is not suitable for manufacturing of fine quality woollen cloth and hosiery products. Thus, we have to import long stable fine quality wool from Australia and New Zealand to fulfill our requirements.

Pakistan produces a modest quantity of raw wool (48,000 tonnes in 1984-85). It increased up to 50.5 thousand tonnes sheep wool and 8.1 thousand tonnes hair (goat) in 1992-93. During 1999-00 production of wool (sheep) was only 41.1 thousand tonnes and Hair (goat) was 21.4 thousand tonnes.

In the early years, Pakistan exported 60% of the total raw wool produced. It was because Pakistan had no woollen Industrial establishment and carpet manufacturing was very nominal. Today the export had dwindled to less than 10% on the other hand import of raw wool is increasing because it becomes necessary to mix with domestic wool, which is poor in quality.
