Whenever you can put a sentence into active voice, you should do
so. But doing so is not always possible. Sometimes there is no
logical or eloquent subject for a sentence, as in the following: The
flowers were left on my doorstep. If you really don't know who left
them, then the passive voice is acceptable.
Why does this all matter to you? Well, the passive voice rears its ugly head frequently on standardized exams, and while it may not be the only grammatical flaw in a sentence, you should always reject it in favor of a reasonable alternative with the active voice.
