Lesson: Data Sufficiency Challenging - 14t05

Tough Content: Example 2

Take a look at this question. Again, the first thing we’ll do is evaluate the question stem.

If a and b are positive integers and a + b > ab, what is the value of a?

1)

2) ab ? a

Focus on the question stem. Do you recognize the math concept that this is testing? Type it into the Text Box, and click Continue.

This question is testing rules.

Review Statement 1 below. Is it sufficient or insufficient? Select the correct answer and then click Continue.

Countinue

This tells us that the product of a and b does not equal a. If b equaled 1, then ab would have to equal a. So b must not equal 1. If b doesn’t equal 1, it must be a that equals 1 in the original inequality. Now we know the precise value of a, so we can answer the question in the stem (what is the value of a?). So, statement (2) is sufficient by itself.
