British Indian Ocean Territory recognized as a territory of the UK in 1965, a number of the British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT) islands were transferred to the Seychelles when it achieved independence in 1976. The education system in the British Indian Ocean Territory is separated into four main parts, primary education, secondary education, further education and higher education. Children in the British Indian Ocean Territory have to legally involve in primary and secondary education which runs from about 5 years old until the student is 16 years old. Basically key stages 1 and 2 will be assumed at primary school and at 11 years old a student will move into secondary school and complete key stages 3 and 4. Students are measured at the end of each stage. The most important measurement happens at age 16 when students purse their GCSE's or General Certificate of Secondary Education. Once students finish their GCSE's they have the option to go onto further education and then potential higher education, or finish school and go into the working world. Primary education starts at age 5 and continues until age 11, comprising key stages one and two under their educational system. From age 11 to 16, students will come into secondary school for key stages three and four and to begin their move towards taking the GCSE's. In British Indian Ocean Territory, primary and secondary education is mandatory; after age 16, education is optional. Once a student completes secondary education they have the choice to extend into further education to take their A-Levels, GNVQ's, BTEC's or other such qualifications
