Lesson: Chapter - 5

States of Matter - Gases

Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter (the others being solid, liquid, and plasma). A pure gas may be made up of individual atoms (e.g. a noble gas or atomic gas like neon)

Gases generally consist of atoms and molecules that are covalently bonded, and their intermolecular forces are very weak.

The molecules of a gas are highly separated, so we say that gases are mostly empty space. A gas has no definite shape—it will take the shape of the container that holds it, and gases are easily compressible.
