A Valueable Mineral Sulphur

Sulphur is a valuable mineral and is used to manufacture fertilizers, pulp, rayons, dyes, paints, sulphuric acid and explosives & chemical industries and matches manufacturing.

Pakistan is not self-sufficient in sculpture requirements, because, we have small reserves of 0.8 million tonnes and production is not up to our national needs. Therefore Pakistan Imports sizable quantities of sulphur to meet national needs. During 2000-01 Pakistan extracted 17428 tonnes sulphur and it became 29,485 tonnes in 2007-08. Baluchistan province is only producer of sulphur and two main deposits of sulphur are Koh-i- Sultan and Sunni.

  • Koh-l-Sultan is located in Western Baluchistan (Eruptive zone) about 300 miles west of Quetta. Koh-sultan is an extinct volcano and here estimated reserves are 738 thousand tonnes. Here extraction of sulphur started during world war.
  • Secon reporting sulphur deposit is Sunni, nich is located in northern Kirthar, about 75 miles south-east of Quetta. The estimated reserve is 59 thousand tonnes at 45 percent grade. While some other deposits are located in Chitral, Hyderabad, Kalat, Karachi and Peshawar districts.
