Proportions in Data Sufficiency: Average

Let's try another proportions word problem translation, this time a question involving averages. Choose your answer, then click Continue.

The average height of a group of 5 people is 70 inches. What is the height of the shortest person in the group?

  1. If the shortest person left the group, the average height of the group would be 72.5 inches.
  2. The ratio of the height of the tallest person in the group to the height of the shortest person in the group is 5:4.
Statement (1) BY ITSELF is sufficient, but statement (2) by itself is not sufficient.
Statement (2) BY ITSELF is sufficient, but statement (1) by itself is not sufficient.
Both statements TAKEN TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement BY ITSELF is sufficient.
EACH statement BY ITSELF is sufficient.
The two statements TAKEN TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Focus on the question stem.

The translation is:

After translating it's much easier to see that the sum of the heights of the four taller people in the group would be sufficient to find the height of the shortest person.

Evaluate each statement separately.

Statement (1) is sufficient. The statement translates:

Subtracting the sum of the heights of the four taller people from the sum of the total heights would give you the height of the shortest person in the group. So, we eliminate Choices (C) and (E).

Statement (2) is insufficient. Remember that ratios are proportions and without other information you can't determine the specific values. Thus, the answer is Choice (A).
