Most of the people think English grammar rules and complex and ambiguous. But Luckily, the rules of grammar are really pretty logical. After you understand the basic rules regarding the parts of speech and the elements of a sentence, you’ve got it made. Here’s what you need to know to do well on sentence correction questions. As an added bonus, this module can help you write the effective essays.

Perspective Grammar

Grammar used at standardized tests is perspective grammar consists of sets of rules which deal with words structures, the way in which words combine to form phrases, clauses and sentences, and the construction of a sentence. A thorough understanding of (some of) these rules is required for the sentence correction section.

Even for native English speakers, who have a good grasp of their mother tongue, and have twelve years of school grammar behind them, this can be daunting prospect. It is the subtle nuances of grammar which usually trip them up.

Sentence-Correction questions are designed to evaluate three basic skills:

  • Recognizing and correcting grammatical errors
  • Recognizing and remedying ineffective expression — awkwardness, wordiness, and sentence-structure problems that obscure or confuse the intended meaning of a sentence
  • Recognizing and correcting errors in idiom

Spelling and punctuation are not covered in Sentence Correction.
