UNO - United Nations Organization

The United Nations Organization came into existence as a product of the Second World War. Its principal aims and objects are the maintenance of international peace and the settlement of all’ international disputes in accordance with the principles of justice and international law. The primary objective of the U.N.O. is to “save succeeding generations from the scourge of war which twice in our life-time has brought untold sorrow to mankind.” It also aims. at achieving international co-operation in solving international problems of economic, social, cultural or humanitarian character and in promoting respect for human rights and for ‘the fundamental’ freedom of all without distinction as to race, sex, language or religion.

Achievements of the U.N.O

The achievements of the U.N.O. are many. In its dual purpose of maintaining peace and stimulating the progress of humanity in various directions through its specialized agencies, the U.N.O. can claim a creditable  record. It played a significant role in the early stages of the lndo-Pakistan conflict over Kashmir. It dealt effectively with the Anglo- French invasion of Egypt. It was not indifferent to the situation prevailing in the overseas territories under Portuguese rule. It took effective action in the various conflicts and armed hostilities between Israel and the Arab countries on various occasions. It has also been grappling with the problem of disarmament. Talks on banning nuclear tests have already borne fruit, and further agreements, in addition to the Nuclear Weapons’ Non-Proliferation Treaty, are likely to take place.
