Now, let's see how Geometry can be tested in the Data Sufficiency format. Choose and answer, and then click Continue.

Does the number of units in the circumference of circle O equal the number of square units in its area?

  1. The area of circle O is 4? square units
  2. The radius of the circle is 2.
Statement (1) BY ITSELF is sufficient, but statement (2) by itself is not sufficient.
Statement (2) BY ITSELF is sufficient, but statement (1) by itself is not sufficient.
Both statements TAKEN TOGETHER are sufficient, but NEITHER statement BY ITSELF is sufficient.
EACH statement BY ITSELF is sufficient.
The two statements TAKEN TOGETHER are NOT sufficient.

Countinue

Focus on the question stem.

To compare the circumference of a circle to the area of a circle, all you need is the radius, diameter, circumference, or area of the circle.

Consider each statement separately.

Statement (1) is sufficient. If you know the area of a circle you can find the radius of the circle (remember the area formula from the previous page?), and once you know the radius you can use that to find the circumference. So, eliminate Choices (C) and (E).

Statement (2) is sufficient. If you know the radius of a circle, you can find the area and the circumference of the circle.
