Television is one of the latest inventions of our
age. The word television” is a combination f two words: “Te le” (distance), i
“vision’ (to see). Thus it means to see from a distance. Ill fact, it an
improved form of radio. Television in Pakistan is in its infancy. October 1964,
the Government of Pakistan established the television Corporation. Its aim was to
introduce a general purpose television service in the country. At present,
there are Television colons at Lahore. Islamabad Quetta. Peshawar. A Karachi
They accost regular programming In Pakistan. Television has reached 5 millions
homes. Television has divers roles to play in ours. It is an important means of
information, entertainment and education.
Television can be a useful source of information.
People can inform of all the happenings and developments in the country economic.
Industrial and political fields. Government activities the well-being of the
nation can he televised. WE can have a look the conference and seminars, giving
the aims, objectives and achievements of the country in various fields.
Prominent literary and political figures of the country can speak to the people
directly. In e hands of politicians’ businessmen and the Government, television
is a powerful source of Propaganda. When local goods are advertised, one
realizes how much the country has progressed. We all know “seeing believes”;
whatever we see on the screen, we believe it at once.
Television provides entertainment to the people.
It has taken the place of cinema. It brings into our homes colour and life to
dispel gloomy hours. There are folk songs from different parts of the country.
There are painting and handicraft exhibitions. We need not go to playgrounds to
enjoy a match; we can enjoy it in our drawing room along with our family.
Music, dances, dramas and interesting stories are presented on the screen.
Special programrs for students, children, men a women are a joy forever.
Television in Pakistan is an important instrument
in the field of education. Primarily i build up a cultural awareness. Then it
imparts scientific knowledge, so important in today world, it also helps to
create a sense of national unity. It propagates moral values. As illiteracy is
no bar to learning from Television programrs. Its range of teaching can be
very vast. A teacher on television from a single room can teach a number of
students sitting in different rooms. This is being done in the western countries.
This will make up the shortage of teachers in certain countries. Students can
see the actual performance of a difficult experiment or operation on the
television. Thus as teacher, Television is a medium of prime necessity.
Pakistan has not yet achieved the pitch of
development in this field. A trained personnel is not available; there is lack
of funds; studios are no filly equipped. But future is very promising. The
Central T.V. Training Centre has been set up at Rawalpindi. Within ten years we
hope to have T.V. Stations at different new cities, local programrs are also
being least in their native languages. Soon T.V will be in every house
because it is very important.
