1308 - Analytical Reasoning

Analytical Reasoning MCQ No. : 48476
  1. Eight engineers A, B, C, D, E, F, G, and H attend a meeting, where they are seated in a row.
  2. Three of these B, F, and H are also chemists.
  3. Four of the eight A, C, D and G are also physicists
  4. No scientists who work in the same two fields will be seated next to one another

If before all the scientists are seated, there is a vacant seat on each side of A, Which two scientists may occupy these seats?

  1. E and C
  2. B and D
  3. H and E
  4. C and D
  5. F and G

Correct Answer: C

Explanation:

The four seating conditions listed allow us to make the following inferences:

  • Inference 1 ---- because of conditions 2 and 4, we infer that B, F, and H, being engineers as well as chemists, must not sit next to the other
  • Inference 2 ---- because of condition 3 and 4 we infer that A, C, D and G, being engineers as well as physicists must not sit next to the other.
  • Inference 3 ---- conditions 1, 2 and 3 allow us to infer that there are no restrictions on where E can sit.

From inference 2, it is clear that no combination that involves either C, D or G is possible. H and E may each sit next to A.
