Lord Waheed Alli stepped down as Chancellor of De Montfort University in July 2015. On 14 October 2015, the university confirmed that its new Chancellor will be Baroness Doreen Lawrence of Clarendon OBE. Baroness Lawrence will be invested as Chancellor of DMU at a special ceremony on campus on 22 January 2016.Following the death of her son, Stephen, in 1993, she established the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds, championing the transformative power of education and increasing the number of students from black and minority ethnic (BME) backgrounds in higher education.
